Following the death of Pope John Paul II in 2005, Liberia issued a stunning commemorative coin honoring the life and legacy of the “People’s Pope.” The coin is a wonderful tribute that features a beautifully colored image of John Paul II. It is a full 39 mm in diameter and is a legal tender $5 issue. When John Paul II’s successor, Pope Benedict XVI, was selected, Liberia also issued a colorized coin in his honor.
